The article provides an overview of the development of political theatre in Guatemala between 1871 and 1954, based on key milestones that shaped the country’s liberal and revolutionary periods. During the former, theatre functioned as an instrument of elite cultural hegemony, while following the October Revolution it acquired a more critical stance toward social reality.
This historical review and analysis are grounded in the theoretical framework of historical materialism and political theatre, with the aim of examining theatre as a tool of ideological control and social transformation.
